Prohairesis matters because commitment in the Stoic perspective is not external control but moral authorship: the capacity to choose how one will assent, judge, and act.
Stoic thought is often reduced to the dichotomy of control. That is too shallow.
The deeper term is prohairesis: the faculty that chooses how to respond. This is the locus of ownership. It is not about controlling outcomes. It is about governing one’s judgments and commitments.
This maps to commitment in the discernment model. The act is not complete when a person sees and evaluates. It completes when they settle into a stance they will own.
The Stoic contribution is that this stance belongs properly to the person, not to external events. Outer conditions constrain. They do not author the commitment.
This is why Stoic discipline is not passive. It is a rigorous account of responsible moral choice under conditions you do not fully control.
